After a surprisingly easy flight I find myself sipping on an iced caramel latte at Starbucks in the central station of Hong Kong. Taking the express train enormous skyscrapers popped up in passing like bionic replacements for trees and I could not help but to feel like I had entered a world of science fiction. The vigorous mountains crashed with their slopes into the water that was beleaguered with pieces of technical equipment that glimmered in the few sunrays that managed to penetrate the dark grey sky. Everywhere there was organization in the most unorganized manner, leaving the confused European traveller with nothing less than awe. I recall myself thinking “So this is where all of our things come from…”. I also wondered about the thick green forests and mountains that surrounded the glimmering city of skyscrapers, what life could be found there? So far, Hong Kong proves to serve as a humbling experience reminding me of how little I know about the world and how much I have yet to learn and understand. The reason as to why I have set up a temporary camp at Starbucks has an easy explanation; I am meeting up with an old local friend I have not seen in years. We both met as two confused exchange students 8 years ago at a boarding school in the US. So I suppose it is natural that we meet up at the heart of America’s coffee addiction. Now awaits a super quick tour of Hong Kong and dinner, because I only have a couple of hours here until I’m off to Bali. I am eager to enter the heart of one of the world’s most influential and famous cities.
