As I type on my keyboard the vibrations from the table makes the basil plant send out whiffs of molecules that tickle my olfactory senses. It makes me happy, and every now and then I look over and see how the plant, Bernie as he is now named, basks in the sun. I bought him yesterday, at the local fruit market in San Rafael, where millions of colorful fruits and vegetables fought for my attention. Today I spent the day reading articles, sipping on tea, and reaping the rewards of having carried home bags full with fresh fruit. But Bernie was definitely my best investment. At the market I found a fruit that I have never seen before, it looked like a hybrid between a pear, an apple and a root bright red and tempting. It was okay, but I still enjoy the pineapples more. New years passed without any remarkable events but I found myself being tired of the hostel life and public drunkenness. For this reason I am happy to back in the cool climate of the mountains and city. The time in Jaco was much needed to gain strength and courage for the upcoming confrontation with University of Costa Rica about their lack of professionalism accepting a student if they don’t have the resources to assist in the work, but I am confident that it will go well. If I get too frustrated here in the city I will just dream myself away to that one time when I made the drop on one of the big waves.
