I have carried my scuba equipment half around the world, and up until today I have not found a place that was worth my while. I didn’t expect it to be below a bridge in the city though. My homegirl Beeze works down in Florida Keys with the conservation foundation REEF educating the community about environmental problems such as the invasive lionfish in the reefs around this area. She also happens to be contracted to spear lionfish as a part of her work. Luckily for me she was able to hook me up with a scuba tank and she took me to a great site for some diving. With cars and trucks roaming the bridge overhead, and frisky over-tanned seniors doing all sorts of sporty activities all around me, I didn’t know what to expect from the clear water in front of me. Yesterday’s morning had given me a clue however. We had gotten up at dawn to drive to a beach where turtles are known to nest. Nesting season just began and we hoped to see some tracks and mark their nests. As we were walking the beach, we saw 4 sharks washed up on the beach. I have not seen many sharks in my life, and it was something eerie seeing so many in the sand. But at that point I started wondering about what secrets I’d find down there. It turns out that Florida is a great place for diving, and the abundance of life was impressive. Perhaps the most exciting thing we saw was a spotted eagle ray, but I must admit I was strangely excited about the loggerhead turtle that passed by. After having stressed for days about finishing everything up in Costa Rica, and successfully having done so, I felt that this was a well-deserved break. I’ve got some sunshine to enjoy in the Sunshine state, smell ya later!
