“Wait what, you’re going to Caribbean? I thought you were working with crocodiles in Costa Rica?” they tell me. Well, yes, I do work with crocodiles, but in the summer I drop whatever “real life” has in mind for me and trade it in for some scuba diving. It will be my third summer going to the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, and this year I am returning as a director for the dive operations. I remember wondering my first summer who the directors were and how they made it that far. I remember wondering a couple of years back who all these people were who seemed to land these dream jobs where having fun is a part of the job description. It turns out that they are just people, like everyone else, like me. I first applied for this job, those years ago, in a state of complete confusion and stress. I had worked two summers in Greece but a newly employed co-worker made it hard for me to enjoy my time there. Somewhere mid summer I decided to not return for the upcoming seasons as long as he remained employed. He maintained his job, so I found myself without one. It was in the middle of finals and I couldn’t sleep worrying about the upcoming summer. I didn’t want to go back to the office job in dress code and squeeze out the last bit of motivation in order to just get up in the mornings. I wanted to work without shoes. I started googling the most ridiculous word combinations I could come up with that could represent my dream job; “Scuba diving, sailing, Caribbean, marine biology, summer”. A company plopped out and I found myself sending away an application in the middle of the night not expecting to get an answer, let alone get the job. A couple of weeks later I had my interview, and the day after a flight was booked and the job was mine. Apparently things don’t have to be harder than that. The count down to fly-day has begun, and I am going to enjoy every day of the Swedish summer before I leave. Gotta go, a new day awaits.
