Once you have a foot in the door, don’t move it – Diplomatic work in the future?

Current location: SIDA partnership forum, Härnösand, Sweden

The three days at SIDA forum was a marathon of exciting information about how to keep the foot in the door that is the opening to diplomatic work within the EU, FN and Swedish government. Although I had a feeling that this was purely a recruitment event rather than a kind act of philanthropy to help students with their career choices, I had not expected them to be so blunt and open about it. “We look at you selected individuals in this room as our recruitment base for the future” was one of the opening sentences on the first day. The three days were tailored to give us the best possible starting position to pursue a diplomacy career. I have never had the thought of becoming a diplomat working with human rights or development, but as the days passed I became more and more comfortable with the idea. I always wondered where they came from, I caught myself thinking at one point. I have no idea what the future holds, what I will work with or what I will accomplish. Whatever it is, I am sure it will be great and of importance to the world. I am excited.
