I have no idea what forces that compelled me to be thrilled by the idea of completing a triathlon. It was just one of those things that I woke up one day wanting to have completed in my life. And once I have set a goal for myself I always feel an obligation to follow through with it. Someone recently told me that the ability to underestimate the difficulty in doing something is as important as the determination to do it. In other words; ignorance is bliss. As goes for completing triathlon. I had prior to this event ran 10 kilometers as my longest distance. And I have done it once. That’s it. And the biking, well, let’s just say that I’m more of a cruiser, with food bags hanging off the bicycle handles, than a racer. The saying “be careful what you wish for”, could for this occasion be adjusted to “just be quiet about what you wish for”, because once I told my colleague “I have always wanted to complete a triathlon”, I was cornered by my own statement together with an offer from friend to help me train for it. I had to do it. Damn. It was more of a pretty fantasy goal that a real one. Said and done. I trained for, and completed, a triathlon. Check. It will be another 10 (or one) years before I do that again. But what I learnt is that the body really is an amazing thing, that can be pushed and bent to your will, and that determination really is what gets you far. Hurray for long distance!
